Blocks for August

Block 18 - August 10

You will need –

  • 1 small hexagon in a light toned fabric.  This is a perfect piece for fussy cutting.
  • 5 small half hexagons in a dark toned fabric
  • 3 medium half hexagons in a medium toned fabric
  • 3 medium half hexagons in a light or medium toned fabric

Join each of the small half hexagons to a medium half hexagon.  Make 6 units.

Start joining the sections together by adding a half hexagon unit to one side of the small hexagon centre hexagon.

Continue adding half hexagon units unit all 6 units have been added. Don’t forget to alternate the colours of the units.

Block 19 - August 14

You will need –

  • 1 medium triangle in a light toned fabric.  This is ideal for fussy cutting.
  • 3 small elongated triangles in a dark toned fabric
  • 6 small triangles in a medium toned fabric
  • 6 small diamonds in a light toned fabric

This block can be constructed in 3 rows but as a continuous row of stitching.  Begin by stitching the dark, elongated triangles to the medium centre in a continuous row of stitching.  Do not cut your thread but knot securely.

Continue to add the small medium toned triangles as a continuous row of stitching.

The outer diamonds are also added as a continuous row of stitching.

Block 20 - August 18

You will need –

  • 4 half hexagons in a light toned fabric
  • 2 small diamonds in a dark toned fabric
  • 2 small diamonds in a medium or light toned fabric
  • 2 small triangles in a medium toned fabric
  • 2 small triangles in a light toned fabric

Join together a medium toned diamond, a light toned triangle and a medium toned triangle.  Make 2 of these units.  Ensure that the orientation of each piece is correct prior to stitching.

Join a half hexagon piece to each of the completed units.

Join these 2 units together to complete the centre section of the block.

Join the remaining half hexagon units to the remaining dark toned diamonds and attach to the sides of the centre unit to complete the block.

Block 21 - August 21

You will need –

  • 3 elongated hexagons in a medium toned fabric.  These pieces are ideal for fussy cutting.  I chose to use a pretty floral but not to centre the design or repeat the design for the 3 pieces.
  • 6 half hexagons in a dark toned fabric
  • 3 small diamonds in a light toned fabric

Join the half hexagons into pairs.  Make 3 identical units.

Add a small diamond to each of these half hexagon units.

Join the ends of the elongated hexagon pieces together.

The half hexagon/diamond units can be added to this unit to complete the block.

Block 22 - August 30

You will need –

  • 3 x 1/3 hexagons in a medium toned print.  I chose not to fussy cut these sections but instead I cut the sections so there were white flowers towards the top of each piece.  This gives a much more relaxed look and is easier when working with unusual shapes such as these.
  • 6 x 1/3 hexagons in a light toned print

Join the 3 medium toned sections together to form a large hexagon.

Begin by adding one of the remaining sections to the outer edge of the completed centre unit.

Continue adding the remaining sections to the outer edge of the centre hexagon to complete the block.
